Organizational Distribution

This section profiles organizations included in the ATLAS dataset by classification, geographic location, and organizational size. In 2023, the dataset included 408 organizations that either filed a CRA T3010 return and/or received a Global Affairs Canada disbursement.

Foundations are presented separately due to differences in their funding structure and reporting patterns, which can significantly affect overall revenue and expenditure averages.

Counts shown reflect organizations included in the dataset for 2023 only, not the cumulative total across all years — see Methodology › Per-year scope.

Organizations by region

Most organizations included in the ATLAS dataset are headquartered in Ontario, Quebec, and the Western provinces. Ontario and Quebec together account for nearly two-thirds of organizations represented in 2023, while Atlantic Canada represents a smaller share.

Larger organizations are more commonly headquartered in Ontario and Quebec.

Methodology note: Regional classifications are based on organization head-office addresses reported through CRA T3010 filings or Global Affairs Canada project records.

Organizations by Revenue Size

Organizations included in the ATLAS dataset vary significantly in size, from smaller community-based organizations to large international institutions. More than half of organizations represented in 2023 fall within the “very small” revenue category (under $1M annually), while a smaller number of large organizations account for a substantial share of total sector revenue.

The charts below show the distribution of organizations by revenue category and organizational classification. Revenue size brackets: Under $1M, $1M–5M, $5M–10M, $10M–30M, Over $30M.
